Magnetic Island is the magnificent island playground just offshore from Townsville. The unique landscape of this World Heritage listed island provides a beautiful holiday destination for a daytrip of for longer family holidays. The major features are the spectacular granite boulder headlands that enclose the 23 beaches and bays, dotted with magnificent Hoop pines create a picture-postcard scene for your holiday. More than 60% of the island is protected as National Park providing a natural haven for the native wildlife and birds and visitors will often see koalas, rock wallabies and possums along the bush tracks as well as many of the 100 species of birdlife that inhabit the island. The clear turquoise waters teem with tropical fish, coral reefs and diverse marine species that can be explored by snorkelling and scuba diving right off the beaches. Finding and travelling to Magnetic Island is very simple - just jump on a ferry for the leisurely 25-minute ferry trip across the bay from Townsville. In 1770 when Captain James Cook discovered the island he believed that the island was magnetic causing interference with his compass - hence the island's name. Tests later on proved Captain Cook wrong, but the name Magnetic Island was retained. There are more than 25 km of bushwalking tracks and scenic paths on the island to explore. Day Visitors and Holidaymakers also enjoy a huge range of activities including fishing charter trips, reef cruises, tennis, golf, water activities, snorkelling, canoeing, parasailing, kayaking, kite and wind surfing and horse riding on the beaches. Magnetic Island is one of the few islands on the Barrier Reef that offer a wide range of places to stay including holiday houses, resorts, caravan parks and camping areas, bed and breakfasts and backpacker resorts.
