Malanda is a dairy and historic mining town on the Atherton Tableland, located about 85 km from Cairns. Malanda was established in 1880s when tin and copper were found at Herberton. The name Malanda is renowned throughout Queensland for its milk and cheese. The Malanda Environmental Park, located just opposite the small Malanda Falls and pool, offers a fascinating short bushwalk through the rainforest and a chance to see the unique flora and fauns of the area. Some other attractions and activities in the area are: # The Peeramon Hotel # The Malanda Art Trail begins at the town library and includes nine colourful artworks celebrating the rich local history - the Original Inhabitants, Transport, Commerce, Hardships and Struggles, the Dairy Industry, Recollections, Early Settlers, Recreation and Looking Ahead # Take a dip with platypus in the pool below Malanda Falls in the mighty Johnson River (crocodile free) # Visit the Majestic Theatre - one of the oldest continually-operating cinema in Australia # The Malanda Hotel with its grand staircase and ballroom # The Historical Resource Centre - the meeting room and home for the collections of printed and photographic materials by the Eacham Historical Society.
