Maria Island is located about 80 km north-east of Hobart, on the East Coast of Tasmania, along the Tasman Highway. You can gain access to Maria Island at the seaside town of Orford. The island has a fascinating history and is worth visiting the island to explore its heritage. The island, steeped in history, is 13 km wide and more than 20 km long. It features steep cliffs rising from the sea, rugged rocky outcrops, and extensive fossil beds to explore. The Maria Island Marine Reserve includes a wide range of local habitats and is part of the beautiful Maria Island National Park. There are many beautiful beaches and coves and the snorkelling and scuba diving is stunning. You can dive and explore the giant kelp forests, reefs of Fossil Bay, large beds of sea-grass beds, large variety of marine life and the many shipwrecks around Maria Island. The marine reserve is an excellent place for bushwalking, beach walking, nature walks, bird watching, and exploring the rock pools.
