The island, steeped in history, is 13 km wide and more than 20 km long. It features steep cliffs rising from the sea, rugged rocky outcrops, and extensive fossil beds to explore. The Maria Island Marine Reserve includes a wide range of local habitats and is part of the beautiful Maria Island National Park. There are many beautiful beaches and coves and the snorkelling and scuba diving is stunning. You can dive and explore the giant kelp forests, reefs of Fossil Bay, large beds of sea-grass beds, large variety of marine life and the many shipwrecks around Maria Island. The marine reserve is an excellent place for bushwalking, beach walking, nature walks, bird watching, and exploring the rock pools.
