Mataranka is renowned as the setting for the renowned Australian novel, `We of the Never Never`, by Jeannie Gunn. A renowned attraction is the Mataranka Thermal Pool in the nearby Elsey National Park, which has warm, clear waters that are spring fed, and are at a temperature of 34 degrees Celsius. The pool is surrounded by a palm and paperbark forest. Bitter Springs, a short drive north-east of Mataranka, is a good alternative to the main thermal pools and has BBQ and other facilities. The nearby river banks are lined with trees and grasses and you can swim 120 m upstream and float down in the current. There is a pleasant 1.5 km loop walking track around the river area with signs displaying information about the spring. Another place to visit is Roper River. The headwaters of the Roper River inside Elsey National Park are popular for bushwalking, swimming, birdwatching, canoeing and fishing.
