Meekatharra is a service town for the mining and pastoral and area in the Murchison district in the Golden Outback of Western Australia. It is a centre for live sheep and cattle transport by road trains. A huge runway at Meekatharra Airport, was built by the Americans during World War II, now serves as a diversion airport for inbound flights to Australia, and is the regional home of the Royal Flying Doctor Service and the School of the Air. The Meekatharra area has many old worked out gold mines and old machinery relics to see and explore including the ghost towns of Peak Hill and Nannine. Join the Meeka Rangelands Discovery Trail which winds around Meekatharra Creek and includes scenic views of the superpit mine and the town. See the State Battery on the Meekatharra Creek and other interesting relics from the past, and the 25 Mile Well located about 40 km north of the town. After winter rains, the red earth around Meekatharra is filled with a dazzling array of colourful wildflowers. Visit Peace Gorge, which is just 5 km from town off the Gascoyne Junction Road.
