Melville Island is Australia`s second largest island after Tasmania. Melville Island and the nearby Bathurst Island in the Tiwi Island is owned by the Tiwi people and run by the Tiwi Land Council. The main communities are Milikapiti, Paru and Pirlangimpiare and the island is not open to the public for tourism, except on an organised tour. There are several major tourism operators on Melville Island including the Melville Island Lodge which operates fishing tours. Melville Island, a scenic 30 minute flight from Darwin, and the fishing tour operators cater for anglers of all levels, and provide guided sport-fishing experience including barramundi and approximately 30 other fish species. There are many packages ranging from short-stay trips and company group tours, through to extended fishing safaris to five magnificent and unspoiled river systems, as well as isolated coastal and off-shore destinations. There are a nukmber of arts and craft galleries on the island.
