Menindee is small, charming historic town located on the edge of the desert about 1000 km north-west of Sydney via the Mitchell, Great Western and Barrier Highways and 100 km from Broken Hill and 140 km south-west of Wilcannia. The Menindee Lakes system provides excellent opportunities for sailing, canoeing, kayaking, water skiing, safe swimming and wonderful fishing. The township of Menindee is associated with the explorers Mitchell and Sturt and also Burke and Wills, who visited the town on their historic journeys through the outback. Menindee has traditionally been a sheep and wool production area but there are now grapevines, and many varieties of fruit and vegetables under irrigation including: tomatoes, rock melons, apricots and oranges. There is much to see and do in the area around Menindee including the Kinchega National Park, the wreck of the paddle-steamer `Provide`, the Woolshed. Visit the Kinchega National Park to explore the wealth of Aboriginal heritage sites within Kinchega National Park and the wonderful bird watching that is available in the area around the lakes.
