Monto is a small modern town located on the Burnett Highway located about 230 km south of Rockhampton and 500km north-west of Brisbane. Monto is a rural services town and the major local attraction is Cania Gorge National Park which is situated about 20km north of town. This park has magnificent landscapes of sandstone cliffs and caves with dry rainforest and eucalypt forest woodlands and on sheltered slopes. The park is 3000 hectares in size and provides a very important habitat for wildlife and a great spot for bush walking, camping and exploring. The road through the National Park ends at Cania Dam which covers 630 hectares. A local highlight is the bushwalk along the 4 km (return) climb from the Cania Dam wall to Castle Mountain The walk offers fantastic views over the dam and the surrounding mountains. Weathering has carved many caves and shapes into the sandstone of Castle Mountain creating fascinating features such as prominent features such as the `Elephants Head`. There is a picnic and recreation area at the lake.
