The oldest Queensland lighthouse at Cape Moreton began its task of protecting shipping on February 14, 1857. The many coral reefs and wrecks in the area provide ideal locations for snorkeling and scuba diving. Other popular water sports are swimming, fishing, canoeing, kayaking, boating, and surfing. The famous Tangalooma Wrecks provide outstanding scuba diving. Moreton Island has no sealed roads and a 4WD vehicle is a necessity for driving along the sandy tracks and beaches for exploring this island paradise. You can bring your own over on the ferry, or hire one on the island or the mainland. There is a wide range of accommodation in the villages on the island and beautiful camping areas.
