Mount Magnet is a historic gold mining town in the Golden Outback Region of Western Australia, located 570 km northeast of Perth on the Great Northern Highway. Only a few mines are still worked and the town is surrounded by remnants of old mining operations, and highly significant Aboriginal sites. Today Mt Magnet is mainly a service centre for the surrounding sheep pastoral district which has very large sheep stations. During spring (September to November) Mount Magnet attracts thousands of tourists to see the wonderful display of wildflowers. Mount Magnet also provides easy access to the historic towns of Sandstone, Cue and Yalgoo. Local attractions include: # Historical Society Museum, # Historic Buildings # Mount Warramboo Tourist Lookout #The Granites - a rocky outcrop spread over several hectares with significant Aboriginal art # Heritage walks, trails and drives # Gold Fossicking # Paynes Find, located 144 km to the south of Mount Magnet, is a historic mine and ruins named after the well known prospector Tom Payne. The Shire of Mount Magnet has a booklet titled `Uncovering the Murchison` which provides a detailed history of the area and includes maps of the old goldmines and of the roads around The Granites. Mount Magnet has a range of accommodation including hotels, motels, a caravan park, backpacker hostel, a lodge, and nearby farmstays.
