The surrounding skiing areas are at an altitude of about 1200 m and the area generally receives enough snow falls during winter for downhill skiing from mid July to mid September. There are three rope tows the University, Mawson and Rodway tows. Also there are a number of cross country skiing options from Mount Mawson, including the Tarn Shelf, the Rodway Range and the Mount Field West area. A number of public shelter huts are located in this region.
