Murchison shire is a major rural and mining centre in the Golden Outback of Western Australia, and includes the local government areas of Murchison, Yalgoo, Cue, Mount Magnet and Meekatharra, generally including catchment area of the Murchison River. The vast Murchison Shire, lying to the east of Kalbarri, is the only shire in Australia without a town although the administrative centre is referred to as Murchison Settlement. There are extensive mining areas in the region including many older abandoned workings. The region also has large Sheep Stations and Cattle Stations. Murchison Settlement is the location of the Shire Office, the Murchison Museum, the Murchison Sports Club, and the Murchison Oasis Roadhouse and Caravan Park. About a 20 minute drive to the west are the rock outcrops of Errabiddy Bluff where you can enjoy a picnic or climb the bluff or see the abundant wildlife in the area. About 150 km north is Bilung Pool with natural water and picnic facilities and 80 km south is the historic Ballinyoo Bridge that crosses the Murchison River. The area is very popular in spring when the wildflowers are in bloom. Population is very scattered; the largest centre is Meekatharra with the small mining towns of Mount Magnet, Yalgoo and Cue.
