The town was substantially damaged in the Black Saturday bushfires in February 2009. The area has many beautiful places to stay and is popular for bushwalking and mountain biking. The Woodlands Rainforest Retreat is hidden in the spectacular rainforest of the Black Spur is a wonderful secret hideaway for couples. There are 4 self-contained bungalows hidden in rainforest, overlooking the fern gullies of Hermitage. The Black Spur area, though devastated by bush fires recently, is beginning to rebuild with establishments such as is the Black Spur Caravan Park, Igloo Roadhouse, Buxton Pub, Buxton Trout Farm, Black Spur Inn, and Crystal Journeys still operating. The national parks are also gradually reopening. The Black Spur Caravan Park Caravan Park fortunately suffered no fire damage at all and is a good place to stay and see the local native vegetation and animal communities re-establishing after the fires.
