Daytrip visitors and holiday makers travelling from Townsville on the ferry or barge arrive at Nelly Bay, which has the major car-hire operators and other major tourism facilities on the island. Nelly Bay is a beautiful location in its own right as well as the island gateway. It is a great place for a walk or jog on the beach and for swimming, canoeing, kayaking, wind-surfing, boating, sailing a catamaran, snorkelling or scuba diving right off the beach to the fringing reef. There are BBQ facilities and a children's playground near the beach. There are more than 24 km of bushwalking tracks on the island that allow visitors to see a variety of flora and fauna, including wallabies and koalas. Try the The Nelly Bay to Arcadia track which is about 6 km long. The tracks starts at the end of Mandalay Avenue and moves through rainforest to the Gustav Creek gully and then climbs provide excellent views across both Horseshoe and Nelly Bays. The track from the top of the hill continues to Arcadia Bay has a diverse array of birdlife in areas of open woodland and scenic views at Sphinx Lookout.
