The river is magnificent and number of cruise operators offer cruises along the Glenelg River taking visitors through the 15 km limestone river gorge with 50 m high cliffs on both sides of the river. There are scenic coastal walks along the coast and Nelson has excellent surfing as well as some sheltered swimming areas along the sandy banks near the Glenelg River mouth. There are many attractions in the Lower Glenelg National Park near Nelson, which includes the Discovery Bay Coastal Park, the Princess Margaret Rose Caves, wineries and the nearby the historical South Australian towns of Port MacDonnell and Mount Gambier. The fishing in the river, off the beaches and shore is magnificent. The main species of fish in the Glenelg River, include, Bream, Estuary Perch, Mulloway and Mullett. There are many excellent bushwalks in the area including: the Lake Monibeong Loop and Sapling Creek Loop, the Livingstone Island Nature Walk, Gorge walk and the Great South West Walk is a superb walk for more serious bush walkers. Other activities include iving, canoeing, kayaking and boating. The World Heritage Picanninnie Ponds are located only a short drive into SA. There is a short walk that follows the outlet Creek to the Sea. Look for the beach springs and floating rock. Snorkelling and Diving is by permit only, which can be obtained in Mount Gambier. Ewens Pond, located along the Port MacDonnell Road, can also be snorkelled. Visit the Princess Margaret Rose Cave and the Tantanoola and Naracoorte caves.
