Newman was built by the Mt Newman Mining Company in the 1960s as a facility for mine workers and their families following the discovery of rich iron deposits on nearby Mt Whaleback. Newman is a popular tourist stop-over point because of its excellent facilities and wide range of attractions. It is surrounded by the ancient eroded hills of the Ophthalmia Ranges and you can visit the largest open cut iron ore mine in the world and visit Karijini National Park. Call in at the Newman Visitor Centre for information and to see the interpretative displays, art gallery, an Outdoor Mining Museum and a fascinating arts and crafts shop. At the rear of the centre is the Mining and Pastoral Museum and Interpretive Garden with a collection of historic mining machinery. Newman boasts a wide range of accommodation including hotels, lodges and cabins and caravan and camping sites are also available.
