The Central West of New South Wales offers a combination of farming, wineries, historic towns, mining and natural beauty. It includes the area west of Sydney and the Blue Mountains, South of New England and north of the Riverina. The major town are Lithgow, Bathurst and Orange. The historic town of Forbes lies near Orange. South of Bathurst are the stunning Abercrombie Caves. The area is rich in gold-rush and bushranger history and the old gold town Sofala, Hill End, Gulgong, Ophir and Rylestone, with its Aboriginal rock paintings, are worth visiting. Mudgee and Cowra are famous the wine growing areas and many of the wineries have cellar door sales and tastings. In the large city of Dubbo is the renowned Western Plains Zoo, which is home to more than 1,500 animals from throughout the world. The Central West region is also famous for its astronomy facilities including the Parkes Radio Telescope and the Anglo Australian Observatory at Sliding Spring near Coonabarabran. There are 4 other smaller observatories in the Central West, these being located at Bathurst, Dubbo, Gilgandra and Cowra that are well worth a visit. There are 12 National Parks and 8 Nature Reserves in the area. The Warrumbungle National Park located 35 km west of Coonabarabran, offers magnificent scenery, and a wide range of native fauna and flora. The area is also very good for bird watching, photography, bushwalking, nature study, and rock climbing.
