The Tennant Creek and Barkly Tablelands Region has its centre at the junction of the Barkly Highway and the Stuart Highway, located about 1,000 kilometres south of Darwin and about 500 kilometres north of Alice Springs. The region has a rich gold mining history, fascinating Aboriginal cultures, wonderful attrcations and the heritage of the development of the huge cattle stations on the Barkly Tablelands. The major town of Tennant Creek is an important service centre for the outlying cattle stations and for the developing tourism industrry. The region`s most well known landmark is the Devils Marbles Conservation Reserve which contain an array of thousands of huge, round and precariously balanced boulders. The Pebbles, an outcrop of smaller granite boulders is located just a short drive north of Tennant Creek. Visit Wycliffe Well (which is famous for numerous UFO sightings), Ti Tree, Newcastle Waters and Elliott to learn about the outback. The Davenport Ranges, whcih can be accessed via the Barkly Highway, is a great location spot for bushwalking, camping and four wheel driving. The Overlanders Way tourism drive between Tennant Creek and Townsville, is a good way to explore the region.
