Uluru and is Australia`s most renowned natural icon and is recognised throughout the world. The huge sandstone monolith, coloured red by iron ore, rises about 350 m above the surrounding plain. It is located about 440 km south-west of Alice Springs. About 40 km to the west of Uluru is magnificent Kata Tjuta, also known as The Olgas. This is a massive pile of 36 rock domes, the largest of which is Mt Olga which is about 200 m higher than Uluru, rising 546 m above the plain. Both Uluru and Kata Tjuta have great cultural significance for the Anangu Aboriginal landowners and there are tours and information at the visitor centres to help visitors learn about the natural and cultural heritage of the area. The magnificent Watarrka National Park, that includes Kings Canyon, lies 300 km to the north-east of Uluru and 300 kilometres west of Alice Springs. There are a number of tourist resorts and excellent tourist facilities, tours and guides available. The resorts offer a wide range of accommodation to suit every tastes and budget.
