Oatlands is a pretty historical village in the centre of Tasmania, located about halfway between Launceston and Hobart. Oatlands is a colonial town, located about 84 kilometres north of Hobart, and boasts the largest collection of sandstone buildings in Australia, and many of them were built by convict labour. Many of its old historic cottages have been renovated and are now run cafes, antique stores and restaurants. Oatlands is the largest town in the Southern Midlands Council area and it services the rich agricultural land in the surrounding district. Nearby is Lake Dulverton, which is a popular fishing spot and is stocked with fish from the Oatlands District High School Aquaculture Centre.
