Ongerup is a rural service town in the Great Southern Region of Western Australia. located about 55 km east of Gnowangerup and 400 km south-east of Perth. The surrounding farms mainly produce canola, wheat, barley, and wool, while smaller quantities of alfalfa, lupins, oats and other crops are also grown. Beef cattle, fat lambs, and pigs are minor industries and tourism is also important in the region. Ongerup is the base for the Malleefowl Preservation Group and home for the Yongergnow Australian Malleefowl Centre. This bird is becoming rare in the wheat belt area due to a loss of habitat and the impact of introduced species. The area is very popular for the Spring Wildflower display in the surrounding countryside and The Ongerup Wildflower Show is held in September and October each year. There are known to be more than 1,300 species of wildflowers in the Ongerup area. The plants range in size from majestic salmon gums which are 30 m high, to small annuals only 5 mm high. There is an excellent native plant garden in the main street of Ongerup. The Ongerup and Needilup District Museum housed in the old railway barracks, showcases the local heritage and has a fascinating display of local Aboriginal artefacts, natural history items, foods and medicinal plants, old machinery, memorabilia and household goods. There are magnificent salt lakes north of Ongerup. The annual 'Ongerup Shears' one day shearing event and sheepdog trials attracts thousands of visitors from all over Australia.
