Patterson Lakes is a suburb of Melbourne, located 35 km south-east of the Melbourne central business district at the start of the Mornington Peninsula. The Patterson River is a popular launching spot for boating and fishing on Port Phillip Bay with marinas, boat storage, 4 public launching ramps, and moorings for yachts and leisure craft. The Patterson River is one of the few safe harbours on the city side of the bay and is very popular. A famous feature of the Patterson River is the National Water Sports Centre (NWSC) on Riverend Road, Bangholme. The centre was developed as an international standard rowing course in preparation for Melbourne`s bid for the 1988 Olympics. The NWSC is now used for a diverse range of water based activities including water skiing, canoeing, kayaking, rowing, triathlons, jet skis and radio controlled yachts.
