The town is named after the local gold prospector, Thomas Payne, who discovered gold in the area in 1911, and was the first to register a gold mining lease and to use the gold battery that was constructed for the miners. The battery is the only currently operational battery left in the state and is a tourist attraction. A gold crushing plant and new gold discoveries and the reworking of old mine sites have rejuvenated mining in the area, which also has pastoral leases. Accommodation is available at the Paynes Find Tavern and many local properties have farmstays properties in the area. From late July to September, particularly after winter rains the area is very popular with visitors who flock to see the fantastic wildflowers which carpet the local landscape.
