Peterborough is also located on the part of the Great Ocean Road Region known as the Shipwreck Coast, as many ships have been wrecks lie in the vicinity. Peterborough is an ideal holiday base located on the Curdies River estuary, which widens to a broad inlet behind the town and provides excellent fishing, swimming and boating to supplement the beach and rock fishing. Port Campbell National Park of the eastern side of the river and the Bay of Islands Coastal Park to the west provide bushwalking and nature appreciation opportunities.
