Port Hedland has a natural deep port which is the main fuel and container depot for the region and for the shipment of iron ore that is delivered to the port by rail. The other major industries in the area, apart from tourism, are the offshore Natural gas fields, salt, manganese, livestock. Port Hedland has a wide variety of water based recreational activities including fantastic fishing, tours for seeing nesting flatback turtles and whales, swimming, snorkelling, diving, canoeing, kayaking, wind surfing, sailing and boating. The turtles can be seen on Munda Beach, Cemetery Beach, Cooke Point and Pretty Pool from October - March each year during the nesting season. Port Hedland is an angler`s paradise targeting a variety of fish, particularly whiting, mullet, bream, and kingfish which can be caught from the beach, shore or by boat. Port Hedland is located at the start of the magnificent Eighty Mile Beach, which is a 100 km stretch of white sandy beach along the coast from Port Hedland towards Broome. Karijini and Millstream National Parks are close by, and the major tourist centre of Broome and the Kimberleys are also in the Region. South of Port Hedland is Point Samson and the tropical islands of the Dampier Archipelago, both favourite fishing spots. Port Hedland has a variety of accommodation including backpackers, caravan parks, camping areas, motels, holiday houses and hotels.
