It is sparsely populated and borders New South Wales and South Australia and the Northern Territory. It contains the main towns of Roma, Cunnamulla, Charleville and Birdsville and other tourist centres. The economic activity in the region is focused on cotton farming, cattle grazing, tourism and exploiting natural gas in the Cooper Basin Gas Field. Charleville is a major tourist centre with many attractions including the Cosmos Centre, the Royal Flying Doctor Service Museum and a Bilby reserve. The towns of Quilpie and Cunnamulla are centres for opal mining. The town of Birdsville, close to the South Australian border is a very famous popular tourist stop for the Birdsville Races and other events. It is the gateway to the famous Birdsville Track, which is a four wheel drive track through the isolated Strzelecki Desert. The eastern section of the South West region is known as the Maranoa and the western parts is referred to as the Channel Country. The South West Region is a wonderful place for a holiday as there is a fantastic array of attractions and activities in the area and many interesting towns to visit and explore.
