Richmond is a famous historic town and tourist centre in the East Coast Region of Tasmania, located on the banks of the Coal River about 24 km east of Hobart. Richmond has a fascinating heritage and is home of the renowned Richmond Bridge which is a lasting symbol of the convict heritage. The sandstone arches the bridge that span the Coal River was built by convicts labour in 1825. You can also visit Richmond Gaol (1825), the oldest jail in Australia, see Grannie Rhodes' Cottage, the 1825 Courthouse. or explore the cemetery of St Johns, which is Australia`s oldest remaining Catholic Church, built in 1836. Enjoy a ghost tour by lantern light or see what the original 1820s Hobart Town was like at the Hobart Town Historical Model Village. Visit some of the wonderful vineyards and wineries in the region. You can taste wine at the cellar door or enjoy a fine meal of fresh Tasmanian produce in a stylish winery restaurant.
