Rushworth, located about 165 km north of Melbourne, is an old goldmining town that has retained its historic charm and natural beauty. It is close to one of the largest Iron-bark forest in the world. The Waranga Basin is a perfect spot for swimming, water skiing and bushwalking. Rushworth is a major service centre for the surrounding farming community and a major tourist centre. Travel south out of town and explore the remains of a once thriving gold rush town at the Whroo Historic Reserve, including a 25 m open-cut mine on the hill. The Rushworth State Forest, south of town, has stands of yellow gum, red ironbark and grey box eucalypts and has excellent bushwalking tracks and abundant wildlife. The forest is a sanctuary for wallaroos, possums kangaroos, wallabies, and more than 100 bird species. Reedy Swamp Wildlife Reserve is home to water birds and is a great fishing location.
