The major road through the valley is the Barossa Valley Way running along the valley floor. The main towns are Tanunda, Nuriootpa, Rowland Flat and Lyndoch - all surrounded by vineyards and wineries. The Barossa Valley has strong German heritage reflected in the town names, Lutheran churches and historic buildings providing a unique ambience that attracts visitors from all over the world. The Barossa Valley has some of the oldest Shiraz vineyards in the world, and remains most well-known for its magnificent Shiraz wines. However the region also produces excellent Cabernet Sauvignon, Semillon and Chardonnay and other wine varieties. The oldest vineyard in Australia is planted in the Barossa at the Langmeil Winery. The major towns in the northern part of the region are: Nuriootpa, Seppeltsfield, Tanunda, Light Pass, Stockwell and Greenock. In the cooler southern areas the main towns are: Lyndoch, Rowland Flat and Williamstown and in the hills there is Angaston, Vine Vale, Pewsey Vale, Penrice and Bethany. Some of the famous wineries and labels in the Barossa Valley are: Wolf Blass, Peter Lehmann, Jacobs Creek, Penfolds, Saltram, Yalumba, and Seppelts and there are about 80 wineries and 500 grape growers in the region. The Barossa has wonderful food, cafes and restaurants and an outstanding array of historic buildings and a fascinating heritage.
