The Outback Region in South Australian is generally regarded as including the area from the Flinders Ranges to the Northern Territory border. There are various tracks which tourists and travellers can take through the outback for various adventures and eco-tours. The most direct and easiest route is the fully- sealed road along the Stuart Highway which travels northwards all the way to Darwin. Three other tracks which are more interesting but are unsealed and require 4WD vehicles are - Oodnadatta Track, Birdsville Track and the Strzelecki Track. Both the Strzelecki and Birdsville Tracks and lead into Queensland, while the Oodnadatta Track links up with the Stuart Highway. The region features large areas of sparkling salt lakes, that fill periodically creating a haven for birdlife, rugged ancient mountain ranges, vast stony deserts, and the tree-less expanse of the Nullarbor Plain with its outstanding scenery and fascinating heritage are only a few of the many and varied highlights that await you. Some of the many attractions in the area are: # The desert areas of the Simpson Desert, the Great Victoria Desert and the Sturt Stony Desert. # Lake Eyre # Woomera is a fascinating outback town with and interesting heritage and is the service centre for a large weapon and rocket testing and research area. # The Mining and Opal towns of Roxby Downs, Andamooka, Coober Pedy and Glendambo. The Andamooka opals mines are open-cut, unlike the underground diggings at Coober Pedy, an this gives Andamooka its own unique character. # Innamincka and Coongie Lakes in the Innamincka Reserve, about 100 kilometres from Innamincka at the end of the Strzelecki Track, This stunning oasis in the desert supports about 25,000 water fowl, with more than 160 species of birds and a large variety of plants and animals. # Mount Dare and Dalhousie Springs # Marree township which is the southern starting point for the legendary Oodnadatta and Birdsville tracks and is part of the renowned Old Ghan Heritage Trail. #Mungerannie which lies halfway along the famous Birdsville track # Oodnadatta and the Oodnadatta Track # Roxby Downs and Olympic Dam Mines # William Creek and Lake Eyre - Several local operators have wonderful scenic flights over Lake Eyre departing from Adelaide, William Creek andn other outback towns, when the lake is flooded.
