The town of Sarina occurs about 37 km south of Mackay and 300 km North of Rockhampton, just inland from coast on the Bruce Highway. Sarina`s local industries include sugar cane, cattle grazing and agriculture. Sarina`s closeness to the coast and mountains brings tourists to this area. Sarina Beach, which is located on the coast just a few kilometres from Sarina, is a major attraction with a patrolled beach for safe swimming and surfing, boat ramp, small store, picnic area, and a scenic lookout. Boating, canoeing, kayaking, sailing and fishing from the beach and boat are very popular at Sarina Beach as well. The local creeks and estuaries have many target species including flathead, grunter, salmon, whiting, bream, and estuary cod. In season, mud crabs, other crabs and prawns are plentiful. For those interested in land based activities there is Cape Palmerston National Park which lies south of Sarina. This area offers Melaleuca forests, spectacular scenery, abundant bird life and excellent beaches and fishing grounds. Camping permits can be obtained from the National Parks and Wildlife Service in Mackay.
