The Simpson Desert covers a huge area in Central Australia from south east of the Northern Territory south to north east of South Australia and into south western Queensland. There are many attractions on the fringes that are an easy day trip from Alice Springs and offer fascinating scenery, cultural and historical heritage. The Simpson Desert offers some of the most challenging and exciting four-wheel-driving in Australia, and rolling sand dunes, the seemingly endless horizon, and challenging tracks all provide the ultimate outback experience. Conventional vehicles can use the road to the Ewaninga Rock Carvings, but 4WD vehicles are essential to reach the Finke Gorge, Old Anando, Rainbow Valley and the road to Chambers Pillar and beyond. There are organised day tours from Alice Springs to the most spectacular attractions in the area. The Old Ghan Heritage Track passes through the Simpson Desert on its way from Port Augusta to Alice Springs.
