Smiths Beach is located on Phillip Island, about 130 km south of Melbourne and 10 km from Cowes. There is safe swimming at many of the sheltered beaches on the northern side of Phillip Island, which are well suited for families. Some of the more popular bay side beaches are located along the coastline near Cowes. The beaches on the southern coastline facing Bass Strait are more exposed and have excellent surfing. The ocean beaches include Smiths Beach and Woolamai, both of which are patrolled in summer by local Surf Life Saving Clubs. These beaches are also popular for surf fishing. Phillip Island is also popular for boating, canoeing, kayaking, sailing and fishing. There is a wide range of accommodation available to suit all tastes and budgets.
