Smithton is the largest town and commercial centre in the North West Region of Tasmania, located on the coast on the Bass Highway, about 85 km north-west of Burnie, in the area known as the Circular Head area. Smithton has a thriving sporting and social culture, and the region is popular with tourists because of its natural beauty and large range of attractions and activities. The local economy is based on forestry, fishing, aquaculture, beef, potatoes, dairy and tourism. It has a large and successful timber mill and a potato processing plant. The main attractions for tourists are fishing, sailing boating and bushwalking. Smithton is an excellent base for exploring the Arthur River area on the West Coast, with stunning wilderness areas to explore and spectacular scenery.
