It was established after gold was discovered in the area 1888, and gazetted in 1890. There was a succession of gold rushes in the Yilgarn region at the nearby towns of Coolgardie in 1892, and Kalgoorlie in 1893 which boosted the local population. Wimmera Hill provides a scenic view of Southern Cross and the surrounding grazing properties and goldmines. The Yilgarn History Museum showcases the facinating history of the area. Gypsum, iron, and salt as well as gold are mined in the area.
