Southern Cross is a small mining and rural service town in the Golden Outback Region Western Australia, located about 370 km east of Perth on the Great Eastern Highway. It was established after gold was discovered in the area 1888, and gazetted in 1890. There was a succession of gold rushes in the Yilgarn region at the nearby towns of Coolgardie in 1892, and Kalgoorlie in 1893 which boosted the local population. Wimmera Hill provides a scenic view of Southern Cross and the surrounding grazing properties and goldmines. The Yilgarn History Museum showcases the facinating history of the area. Gypsum, iron, and salt as well as gold are mined in the area. Some of the local attractions are: # Frog Rock - Features a large rock with wave like formation, wildflowers and is popular for picnics. # Karalee Dam # Old Southern Cross Cemetery - dating back to 1890 # Frazer`s Mine - real working gold mine since 1888 # Yilgarn History Museum # Marvel Loch - affluent gold mining and farming area # Golden Valley # Mt Palmer Fauna and Flora Reserve with a wonderful display of wildflowers in springtime. Southern Cross is on the standard gauge railway from Kalgoorlie to Perth to and The Indian Pacific and Prospector passenger trains service the town.
