dance Listed Below are the best Australian Australian Gliding Flying, Flights, Joy Flights, Adventures, Training and Locations. Most people consider gliding to be the ultimate flying experience, as close to soaring like birds as humans can get. Its quiet, gentle and awe inspiring. It is a sport that can be enjoyed by all ages, on many levels, from simple local joy flights, to cross country soaring adventures, to exhilarating aerobatics and finally to National and International competitions. Modern gliders that soar on the air currents and thermals like birds are the product of much refinement since the first glider carried man aloft in 1853. On November 12, 1894, Lawrence Hargrave, the Australian inventor of the box kite, linked four of his kites together, added a sling seat, and flew 16 feet at Austinmer, near Sydney. By demonstrating to a sceptical public that it was possible to build a safe and stable flying machine, Hargrave opened the door to other inventors and pioneers. The Hargrave-designed box kite, with its improved lift-to-drag ratio, was to provide the theoretical wing model that allowed the development of the first generation of European (and American) airplanes. The most efficient modern gliders can travel at 250 km per hour on flights of over 1000 km in length. There are Gliding Clubs and joy flight operators all around Australia, often in the most scenic locations. Gliders can be towed into the air by light aircraft, and some gliders have small engines to get them aloft. You can learn to fly gliders at various gliding schools. Learn to Fly with fully qualified glider instructors who will teach you how to fly these modern gliders. See Hang Gliding, Paragliding and Paragliding for other gliding options.
