The town of Stanley lies at the base of 'The Nut`, a large flat-topped rocky headland that is 150 m high. You can walk or take the chairlift to the top and see spectacular views of the coastline. Stanley has retained the atmosphere of a port with a small fishing fleet, a charming marine aquarium, many historic cottages and an array of art galleries and antique shops. In the wharf area there many historic buildings, some converted to tourist facilities and charming accommodation. The Highfield Historic Site, dating from 1837, home of the Dieman's Land Company, is located near Stanley. It includes the homestead, stables, barns and workers` cottages. Tours operate daily and there are ghost tours after dark. The row of cottages below The Nut provides a unique backdrop to this charming seaside town. The local fishing fleet ties up near the old wharf There are many fine art and craft galleries, a pub and food outlets in Stanley, and many interesting tourist attractions. South of Stanley are Mawbanna and Dip Falls.
