Stenhouse Bay was originally established for the quarrying and exporting of rock gypsum, which has since ceased and the works and most of the mining town were removed. A few houses were left for the rangers of the National Parks and Wildlife Organization manage the magnificent Innes National Park. From the cliftops at Stenhouse Bay where you can see migrating whales during the winter months. There are many walking trails available in the area. Explore the Thomson/Pfitzner Plaster Trail that extends from Stenhouse Bay to the historic Inneston Village. Other trails include the old woodcutters trails and the magnificent Royston Head coastal trail. The fishing is magnificent off beaches in the park or the Stenhouse Bay Jetty or join the anglers fishing the salmon run at Browns Beach. There is limited accommodation at Stenhouse Bay including the Stenhouse Bay Hall with its bunk-style accommodation and at the Stenhouse Bay Campground.
