St Helens, located on Georges Bay, is the largest town on the North East Coast of Tasmania. It is located about 35 km north of St Marys and 170 km east of Launceston. St Helens is a popular holiday town and holiday makers with large white sand dunes, beautiful scenery, wonderful beaches. There is fantastic fishing and popular varieties are crayfish, abalone, scallops, flounder and oysters. The long headland of St Helens Point, which surrounds the bay, is mostly reserved for recreation. There is a large range of habitats and locations - you can fish from the shore and beach, charter a boat for marlin and tuna fishing offshore, hire a tinnie and an outboard and fish in the bay, or head inland and catch bream and trout upstream in the Scamander River. There are great walks in the St Helens Point State Reserve and Bay of Fires Coastal Reserve. The beaches around Georges Bay extend along the 50 km of coastline, and are ideal for safe swimming and surfing. There are many fine places to stay on the beach or waterfront at St Helens.
