The Macarthur Region of Sydney includes the area in the Local Government Areas of Campbelltown, Camden and Wollondilly. The Macarthur Region is generally viewed as the area where the urban streets and developments of Sydney make the transition to the rural countryside. The area is named after John Macarthur, who in 1803 was granted about 5000 acres at Cowpastures (as the area was originally know) and began grazing the Merino sheep that eventually became the backbone of Australia`s Wool Industry. He and his sons also began the dairy industry, fruit growing, viticulture and wheat. The region is steeped in history and its rural setting and many attractions provides many opportunities for recreation. Macarthur is becoming popular with tourists keen to enjoy living heritage, adventure tourism activities, horse riding and genuine Australian experiences.
