It is located on spectacular cliffs above the east (left) bank of the Murray River close to where the river flows into Lake Alexandrina. You can reach Jervois on the other side of the river via the Tailem Bend Cable Ferry. The major rural industries in the area include pig farming, dairying, tourism and grain growing. The Tailem Bend focus is mostly on the river and the railway which was for so long its lifeblood. There is a riverfront caravan, apartments, camping and boating facilities and good opportunities for fishing, bushwalking and bird-watching. Houseboats moor at a pontoon and here are stairways to the cliff tops with a choice of restaurants to choose from. Visit Old Tailem Town, which is a pioneer village with about 70 restored buildings that showcase the early days of life in a Mallee settlement The village includes corner stores, hospitals, dentists, emporiums, dance halls, chemists, barbers, butchers, bootmakers, pubs, bakers, saddlers, clock shops, stables, police stations, coach and bike shops and the Cobb and Co coach terminus. The Poltalloch Homestead at Narrung that was built in 1876 is well worth a visit.
