North-west of Hobart is the Derwent Valley, home to hop fields, orchards, lovely villages and a wonderful array of attractions and activities for holiday makers. The Lyell Highway, which is often called the `The Rivers Run` follows the path of the Derwent River and up into the mountains and wilderness of Tasmania's central Highlands. The mighty Derwent River rises at Lake St Clair and includes rich farmlands, rural settlements, rugged escarpments and forests. The gateway to the area is the main town of New Norfolk, with its fine collection of heritage buildings. Beyond historic farming settlements of Ouse and Hamilton , the highway climbs into the highlands and eventually reaches the stunning beauty of the Central Plateau and Lake St Clair, Australia`s deepest lake. The area boasts a number of excellent trout fishing river and lakes, including the renowned Great Lake. Local attractions include: # New Norfolk # The historic village of Hamilton with its craft, art and antique galleries and a fine museum # Lake St Clair with its beautiful scenery, ferry rides to the head of the lake, excellent bushwalking in the National Park and wonderful trout fishing # The Styx Valley, south of Maydena with its tall hardwood forests # Ratho, the oldest golf course in the southern hemisphere and home to the Australasian Golf Museum.
