Tewantin began as a river port where ships travelled up the river and load cedar logs floated down the Noosa River from the rich timber stands upstream near Lake Cootharaba. Tewantin was also an important service centre and port in the days of the Gympie gold rush. Today Tewantin is a regional centre for regional pineapple, sugar, beef and timber producers. It is also a tourist centre because of its excellent fishing and local tours of the coloured sands at Teewah, the Cooloola lakes and Cooloola National Park. Tewantin is also the departure point for the car ferry to the Noosa North Shore, Fraser Island and the Great Sandy National Park. Noosa Marina is a bustling complex on the river with charming cafes and restaurants all with river views. The marina and Tewantin are also home to the Noosa Marina Visitor Information Centre and the Noosa Regional Gallery.
