At its peak, Tilpa was a large river port for paddle steamers that carried supplies along the Darling River to local sheep stations and carried bales of wool down river to Wentworth, at the confluence of the Murray and Darling Rivers. The local Tilpa Hotel was built over 100 years ago. Visitors can write a message on the inside walls, like thousands of other tourists before them, in exchange for a small donation to the Royal Flying Doctor Service. Tilpa is mostly a grazing area, mostly focused on sheep and wool, and small areas of irrigated land along the river. Camping and fishing are very popular along the river.
