The Upper Snowy River area includes the middle reaches of the Snowy River in Victoria in the area surrounding the Snowy River National Park, 390 kilometres north-east of Melbourne. This area has some of Victoria`s most spectacular magnificent deep gorges, river scenery and diverse forests. The park covers an area of about 99,000 hectares protecting Victoria`s largest forest wilderness. In the north, the Gelantipy Plateau and Bowen Range dominate. Flowing south into the Snowy are the rugged waterways of Rodger River and Mountain Creek. A lot of the area is wilderness, protecting areas of high conservation value and tracks in wilderness areas are closed to public vehicles. McKillops Bridge is one of the few places in the park with access to the Snowy River by conventional vehicle. The Deddick and Snowy Rivers meet just upstream of the bridge and the beautiful sandy beaches and rock pools provide magnificent swimming. This is also a great place to launch canoes and kayaks to explore the gorges downstream. The Snowy offers thrilling kayaking, rafting, canoeing with rapids rugged gorges, flat sections with sand bars and beautiful scenery. The gently sloping sand bars make ideal camp sites. There are many great bushwalking tracks in the area. Another fantastic spot is Little River Gorge, Victoria`s deepest gorge, lying to the west of McKillops Bridge and downstream from the junction of the Snowy River and Little River. There are camping grounds at McKillops Bridge, Balley Hooley and Waratah Flat that have picnic facilities, pit toilets and fireplaces. Hick's Campsite and Raymond Falls have basic picnic facilities. Some of the local towns in the area include Buchan, Gelantipy, Wulgulmerang, Bonang and Nurran north of Orbost.
