Walgett is an important service centre for a rich pastoral area which stretches to the Queensland border. Walgett is located on the Namoi River near its confluence with the Barwon River about 700 km from Sydney, 125 km east of Wee Waa and 115 km north of Coonamble. Walgett is known as the `Gateway to the Opal Fields` at Lightning Ridge (76 km away) and to the Glengarry, Grawin and Sheepyard Opal Fields. The local rural industries include fat lambs, sheep studs, wool, beef cattle and wheat. It is also a great fishing spot for Murray cod, Golden Perch and catfish, in the Namoi and the many other rivers in the area.
