The tiny settlement of Wickham is located on the far northern tip of King island on Cape Wickham with its famous lighthouse. The Cape Wickham Lighthouse is the tallest in Australia and the Southern Hemisphere at 48 m high. Established in 1861, the lighthouse tower is constructed of locally quarried stone, and has walls 3.4 metres thick at the base. It has 11 flights of stairs each with 20 steps. The light was lost its keeper in 1921 after which the Superintendent`s house and the three cottages were demolished. The light is now services by the lightkeeper from Currie. King Island is renowned for its production of lobsters, cheese, dairy products, mineral water, kelp, and beef. King Island provides safe harbour for passing yachts and the site of a wind farm operated by Hydro Tasmania.
