Wilpena Pound is a spectacular rock amphitheatre with only one entrance via a narrow canyon and across Sliding Rock. The pound is 17 km long and 8 km wide. It can only be explored on foot. There are many well-marked and graded bushwalks in the area including one to the highest point - St Mary Peak. There is an amazing variety of landscapes, views, wildlife and vegetation. The peaks change colour as the light changes during the day. With peaceful gorges, rugged mountain scenery and a huge array of birds, fauna and flora, the Flinders Ranges National Park is renowned in Australia. Some of the highlights include walks to Wilpena Lookout, Rawnsley Bluff, The Brachina Gorge Geological Trail, Ferntree Falls and Clem Corner. There are Aboriginal rock paintings at Sacred Canyon and Arkaroo Rock. There is a great range of accommodation, scenic flights, 4WD tours and a general store at the stunning Wilpena Pound Resort, which is also home to the new Wilpena Pound Visitor and Information Centre.
