The main industries of the area are sheep and cattle, opal mining and tourism. Winton`s rich history is linked to the Great Shearers` Strike, Waltzing Matilda and Qantas, but today the town is famous for dinosaurs. The largest set of dinosaur bones ever found in Australia was discovered on a property outside Winton in 1999 - a 20-30 tonne Sauropod nicknamed 'Elliot'. The Waltzing Matilda Centre is a very popular tourist attraction as Winton is where the famous Australian song was written. Winton also hosts the Bronze Swagman Bush Poetry competition. The boulder opal industry has also been a major focus for Winton.
